Finding My Sound: How I Learned to Trust the Process
By Eddy Ratty • Afrobeats | Afro-fusion | Artist Journey
Finding your sound as an artist is not something that happens overnight — it’s a long, emotional process of trial, growth, and sometimes, silence.
When I started making music in Benin City, I was just chasing the feeling — I didn’t fully understand my sound yet. I was experimenting with dancehall, Afropop, and even hip-hop elements. Every new beat felt like a different chapter. But it took time to realize that my true sound lives somewhere between rhythm and soul — what I now call my Afro-fusion identity.
After moving between Lagos and the UK, I started to see how music connects differently across places. In Lagos, you feel the drums in your bones. In the UK, it’s about the vibe, the energy, the blend of cultures. That mix changed me as an artist — it helped me grow into something more open, more intentional.
There were moments I wanted to quit. Some days, I felt lost in the noise — trying to sound like everyone else to fit in. But every time I got quiet and returned to my roots, I heard the truth in my melodies. I heard home.
Now, every song I release — from “Badman Thing” to “Gbido” — carries a little piece of that journey. My sound isn’t just music; it’s emotion turned into rhythm, and it keeps evolving with every experience I live through.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this — trust your timing and your story. Your sound is already inside you. You just have to listen closely enough to hear it.
